A simple model for the relationship between star formation and surface density

چکیده
We investigate the relationship between the star formation rate per unit area and the surface density of the ISM (the local Kennicutt-Schmitt law) using a simplified model of the ISM and a simple estimate of the star formation rate based on the mass of gas in bound clumps, the local dynamical timescales of the clumps, and an efficiency parameter of around ≈ 5 per cent. Despite the simplicity of the approach, we are able to reproduce the observed linear relation between star formation rate and surface density of dense (molecular) gas. We use a simple model for the dependence of H2 fraction on total surface density to argue why neither total surface density nor the Hi surface density are good local indicators of star formation rate. We also investigate the dependence of the star formation rate on the depth of the spiral potential. Our model indicates that the mean star formation rate does not depend significantly on the strength of the spiral potential, but that a stronger spiral potential, for a given mean surface density, does result in more of the star formation occurring close to the spiral arms. This agrees with the observation that grand design galaxies do not appear to show a larger degree of star formation compared to their flocculent counterparts.

In this paper, we have considered that the strange-star consists of quark matter from its center to surface. For quark matter, we have used two models, the MIT bag model and string-flip like model. In the bag model, the energy of the system has been considered the kinetic energy of the particles of system in addition to a constant B. We have considered two states for B, one of them is constant...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Molecular Gas Tracers and Kennicutt-schmidt Laws
We provide a model for how Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) laws, which describe the correlation between star formation rate and gas surface or volume density, depend on the molecular line chosen to trace the gas. We show that, for lines that can be excited at low temperatures, the KS law depends on how the line critical density compares to the median density in a galaxy’s star-forming molecular clouds. ...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between Gas, Stars, and Star Formation in Irregular Galaxies: A Test of Simple Models
Irregular galaxies are a unique test of models for the physical laws regulating star formation because of their lack of spiral density waves and rotational shear. Here we explore various instability models for the onset of star formation in irregular galaxies. If the gas is unstable, clouds and eventually stars can form, and so these models should predict where star formation occurs. Critical g...
متن کاملThe Effect of Local Galaxy Surface Density on Star Formation for HI selected galaxies
We present the result of investigations into two theories to explain the star formation rate-density relationship. For regions of high galaxy density, either there are fewer star forming galaxies, or galaxies capable of forming stars are present but some physical process is suppressing their star formation. We use HI Parkes All Sky Survey’s (HIPASS) HI detected galaxies and infrared and radio f...
متن کاملMolecular Hydrogen and Global Star Formation Relations in Galaxies
We use hydrodynamical simulations of disk galaxies to study relations between star formation and properties of the molecular interstellar medium (ISM). We implement a model for the ISM that includes low-temperature (T < 104 K) cooling, directly ties the star formation rate to the molecular gas density, and accounts for the destruction of H2 by an interstellar radiation field from young stars. W...
